How effective was the Il-2 'Sturmovik'?

I know Wikipedia is garbage in aspects, but it's even more garbage than usual on its article on Il-2, as the section on combat performance feels iffy to me.
So I'd like to ask, how effective actually was Il-2? One gets the feeling that Stalin wouldn't have sent that particular telegraph had Il-2 been as underperforming as that section suggests, even factoring in the iffy performance of air attack in WW2 generally.
