Best tips on preparing to make dinning reservations?

Looking for tips and hints of what has worked for everyone when making reservation? I am about a month or so out from making them and I’m already anxious about it. I know we are only doing a couple sit downs but I really want to make them for those couple places. Also, If we don’t get reservations how bad is walk up to get a table? How long do people usually have to wait? Just trying to prepare and plan.
