Is Disney food actually THAT good and THAT unique in some cases?

Wasn't really sure how to phrase the question, but I constantly read of people saying "can't wait to get back to The Poly for the Dolewhip" or "we always stay near the Boardwalk for the Beignets"... just today I read a post about the banana bread..
Are people exaggerating here? I mean, could you easily pickup this stuff at Walmart or other cafes and places? Or is the food (in some instances) genuinely that good and unavailable anywhere else (within reason)?
Genuine question from a guy from the UK who has no point of reference with these types of foods
