Does Nodding really help sell desserts?

I knew a waiter who told me he could sell desserts to ANY table. He asked me to watch as walked up to a table and he started nodding while he described each desserts. He nodded continuously as he spoke and pretty soon several people at the table were nodding in unison back at him. At that point he'd close the sale. Anyone tried the nod tactic? Is it effective or just annoying?
