2018 STi: Turn Signal Relay Weirdness

Disclaimer: I am not sure if my STi has LED bulbs in the turn signals. When I received it the only LEDs I was aware of were in the backup lights and dome light. They don't look necessarily brighter or anything.

Issue: Driving home from 4th of july vacation, the turn signals on my sti got weird real quick. When trying to signal, both would flash, sometimes they would flicker and then eventually the both just started flashing like the hazards were on. I disconnected the left headlight and tailight clusters just so I wouldn't be signalling everywhere and hung in the right lane for 160 miles.

My first guess is the turn signal relay because everything started getting wonky at once, no just one single side.

The unit I had in the car at the time of failure was this:

I ordered a replacement off of Amazon via the 6111aJ001 part number and received this:

After installation, when activating one side, both sides would go off. It appears this unit is for a Toyota Yaris, but is it applicable in our cars? the sticker on the outside was the correct part number.

A) Am I barking up the right tree?

B) Should I pull all the indicator bulbs to see if there are any failures?

Thanks!
