Do the latest versions of WC3 handle gateways differently?

I'm trying to add a custom gateway to my WC3 client, which is a legit copy and updated to the latest version.
I have tried the BNetGateWayEditor app and manually editing the registry. I can see the server information was added, but the game client ignores it and only shows me the official servers in the list of available realms.
Any ideas?
