Stalling at idle

Started up the old brick this morning and it was surging pretty bad, put it in gear and it stalled. Had trouble starting it again, when it did start it was pulsing when I gave it throttle and would stall out if I let the throttle off. No check engine code was thrown. Really confused about the source of that kind of symptom.
