I've watched a looooot of TV and like most people I was a fan of TLA and even TLOK. And while I recognize the latter had a lot of flaws I still really enjoyed, to some extent more than TLA.
I enjoy Voltron, and it's been a pretty casual watch so far since I usually just bang out an episode on the way to work and on the way back. I think the humor is pretty good, and I like all the characters though I don't think any stand out too much (but my favorites are Keith and Coran).
Also to be clear, I'm not saying "Voltron isn't like TLA/LOK so it sucks". Anything I mention is just problems I have with Voltron in general, and things I think TLA and other shows did better.
-Plot needs more focus. There's way too much 'go to planets and solve their problem of the day, usually relating to Zarkon.' Enough already. There needs to be some sort of extended arc or conflict for a season beyond the whole war against Zarkon.
-Secondary villains are completely unmemorable. A character like Azula or Zuko, and even Mai and Ty Lee had a lot of personality and special skills that made them compelling to watch the heroes go against. The heroes fighting the villain of the week or some giant monster isn't interesting because it's just created by Zarkon's warlock and disposed of nearly as quickly.
-The action is terrible. Remember when they were fighting the shirshu and it didn't seem like there was a way to beat it? And they used the perfume which had been set up earlier, to combat the monster's nose which had been thoroughly established that it relied on? That was clever. Good action is satisfying when you wonder how a character is going to get out of a situation and they smartly conquer it.
Every single action scene in Voltron so far has been won by the characters getting a new ability and then using it to beat their enemy. That's as lazy writing as it gets and there were only so many shonen I could put up with it before that got old. The fights would be so much better if the limits of both the heroes abilities and the villains were clear. Even better if the villain is someone the audience has some investment in.
I'm not trying to shit on the show, somehow I doubt these complaints are original and sorry if this is a somewhat common post. I think the show has a good base and has the potential to be good, but these constant issues are really detracting my enjoyment of it.
Is there a moment in the show where it takes the next step? An episode? If so, I'm fine with knowing when because I'd like to just binge to get there ASAP. I knew Mad Men was a slow start too so I just banged out the first two and a half seasons to not have to put up with the wait as long, and I'm fine with doing it here.
