Hello! We are planning a 9-day trip mid-January and looking for feedback and recommendations on this rough itinerary. Its our 1st trip to Iceland, we understand that weather will certainly impact these plans, especially heading North. We are also monitroing the seismic activity near the Blue Lagoon. We are going in January to maximize our chance of seeing the Northern Lights, so if we can get in some hot springs and see the lights, we will be happy.

Day 1: Arrive KEF early morning, rental car 4WD with GPS, stop for breakfast at Kokulist bakery, Blue Lagoon (assuming no seismic danger and its open), drive to Rejkjavik city center hotel, easy walk-around town, hot dogs and dinner.

Day 2: Bus tour of Golden Circle with Stop at Secret Lagoon and Night time Northern Lights chasing

Day 3: Depart Hotel, drive to late morning visit to Laugurvatn Fontana, late lunch at Fridheimar, drive to hotel Kria in Vik

Day 4: Visit Dirholaey, Reynisfjara beach, Myrdal Church, Lava Show

Day 5: Depart Vik, drive north to Jokulsarlon area, visit Black Diamond Beach and Glacier Lagoon area.

Days 6 through 8 – we are looking for suggestions. Ideas we have are:

a. Drive North to Hofn, Arctic Henge, Husavik, GeoSea Hot spring, Akureyri, return back to Reykjavik (driving West?)

b. 1 Night in Hofn area, then head back along South coast towards Reykjavik, visit Hvammsvik spring and West Coast

c. Bus or Domestic Plane to Akureri or Husavik for 2 days

d. Boat-based Northern Lights tour

e. Any other ideas? Smaller itineraries in case weather doesn’t allow us to go past Vik?

Last Night in Iceland would love to spend night in Rejkjavik Domes, but super expensive! Is there any way to get a discount?

Day 9: Morning in Rejkjavik Area – Head to airport by noon for departure

Thanks for reading this long post and thanks in advance for your input!
