How much do VTubers "get into character"?

Of course I know the answer is obviously "It depends", so I guess I'm asking for experiences. How much do Vtubers "get into character"? Do they/you see themselves as their character, or their characters as separate people? Is it like acting, roleplaying, something more, something less? Just something that interests me as someone who's never done much of any of that.
