[I made this a few months ago but thought I’d repost bc the sub grew 5x since then]

For me,

  • Automatically assuming you have warm undertones. I think a lot of brown girls have neutral or cool undertones but they don’t realize it. A lot of brown girls get hate for not wearing the right foundation shade but it’s hard bc most makeup isn’t made with our skintones/undertones in mind. Foundation would always looked weird on me bc I didn’t know my undertones. If u have any tips for finding your undertone pls share bc there’s barely any resources on it for brown girls.

  • Thick brows/brow lamination: ik it’s a trend since like 2015 but most brown girls look better with medium/thin brows especially if you have a small face. Also get them threaded often not just once in a while.

Trying to lighten skin color and wearing lighter foundation. I worked in cosmetics and I know all about undertones.

If you pick the right undertone you can wear one shade lighter if you desire but not 2 or 3 shades. Wearing lighter foundation does not make you fairer.

I had several Indian customers who are disappointed to see the color of the foundation bottle I matched them with. Sometimes I put both foundation and take a picture with my phone to show them the difference and that convinces them.

Here's another way to check for undertones:

  1. Put on a neutral shade and put it thickly so you can see how it looks on you.

If it looks yellowish, you are a cool tone. Try on a shade with a cool undertone

If it looks pinkish then you are warm, try on a shade with a warm undertone

If it does nothing then you're neutral.

What color clothing look better on you? If you can wear almost any color then you're neutral. If you look better in blue, green, pink then you're cool. If you look better in yellow, red, purple, coral...then you're warm.

It's also possible to be in-between 2 undertones. I'm a warm leaning neutral.

I wear neutral foundation and sometimes warm depending on brand. But for lipsticks I have to wear a warm pink. Pink lipsticks look too blue on me. I need pink lipsticks on the warmer side.

If I'm wearing blue or green makeup it has to be on the warmer side. Example turquoise as opposed to blue.

Thick liquid liner. Everyone does it. And no other makeup but just the liner.

I prefer a smudged eyeliner and mascara instead.

This. Also use high quality eyeliner pencils that stay. Cheap ones run easily. I like makeup forever. I have that smudged look and it stays on all day.
