background buzzing in audio when wearing headphones?

when listening to the audio i recorded I hear a background hissing (for lack of a better word) when wearing my headphones, but don't hear it from my computers speakers. What causes this? I know noise reduction may help, but in my experience that causes the audio to sound too boxed in (for lack of a better word). although this and this problem in general might be due to me being very soft spoken.
