Would $80-$90k/yr be enough for someone in the North Saanich area?

Post Body

Hi folks!

I am (unfortunately) an American trans woman. I’ve been on edge for awhile but in light of recent events I think it’s finally time to jump ship. I currently live in a safe US state (Oregon) but most of my life was spent in the state of Texas. Texas has started to compile a government registry of transgender people (and I changed my legal documents there so I’m likely on it), and I’m concerned that without any federal weight on them it’ll become far far more dangerous than it already is. Some municipalities in my home state have started to offer bounties for reporting transgender people, and my hometown has openly advocated for violence. This includes a significant majority of my own family. I’m debating a second legal name change as well.

While Oregon is safe, I frankly don’t think I’ll be able to keep access to trans healthcare for too long if things progress as they have. Project 2025 seems pretty clear on that.

I currently make the equivalent of $115k (CAD) as a short haul / food distributor commercial truck driver here. I have only had this income for a short time so savings was limited. Prior I made about $68k (CAD) and got by okayish.

There’s a posting from my current employer in North Saanich, and I could (in theory) get a sponsored transfer. I have 5 years experience and a clean record, and would get a glowing recommendation from my current boss. According to a company driver I know in the area, they average $95k, so $80-$90 is a conservative estimate.

I’m already mostly car-free in lifestyle here, though I do own a sports car. I’d be happy to sell it / trade down. I typically commute 22.5km a day on my PedElec bicycle, and have a normal bicycle as well.

I pay the equivalent of $1850 CAD for rent/utilities here, for a small but nice studio. I would be happy with an equivalent living situation, if that is possible?

What are typical deposits/fees for new rentals? Medical bills this year wiped my savings pretty hard.

I could also request a transfer to the greater Toronto area, and from what I understand they’re paid a good bit more, but I love the Pacific Northwest with all my being. Being established here and able to be a point of contact for loved ones who want to follow would be super beneficial.

Thanks for y’all’s patience and understanding.

It definitely seems like one of the most difficult places to immigrate to, as an American!

From my understanding though, yall need truck drivers pretty badly?

Thank you for the response!

Outside of needing HRT/antidepressants I’ve thankfully gotten my health relatively managed. I’m pretty well established on all of them (years ) so I’d just need continuations of them.

I’d developed celiac disease out of the blue and it messed me up pretty hard before we figured out what it was. Moving forward it’s just diet modifications and the occasional extra cancer screening.

I’d definitely be happy to be able to bike commute! It has done wonders for my health this year.

Five years trucking experience, no tickets no crashes! 🫡

An entirely valid question!

From my understanding, commercial truck drivers are still an in-need skilled profession? BC’s PNP program says NOC TEER 3 professions are eligible.

I would have to reach out to our Canada branch and get info from them on if they’d meet their end’s requirements though, you are correct.

That is good information to know! Scams for truck drivers are also everywhere here in the states. It sucks!

This posting was directly on our company’s global career site, and I should be able to verify it next time I’m in my local work office.

Yeah, healthcare is definitely a concern. Outside of being trans / celiac disease I’m in pretty good health. I am thankfully well established on HRT (8 years) so I’d just need a continuation. Surgeries here are also booked years out, and while I’d still like to pursue that I’m not too surprised.

Thanks for the reply!

While I’ve never backed a b-train (or any doubles) I regularly pull a tri-axle trailer 43.5 metric ton setup! Lots of time in both tight urban environments, and crisscrossing the Cascade Mountains in both summer and winter.

They’re offering $10k USD rewards for catching any trans person using a public restroom that doesn’t align with their birth sex. Call the cops and/or file a lawsuit against the trans person.

Texas did the same thing to women seeking abortion care, they allowed anyone to sue folks they caught helping and backed the judgements on a state level.

The town is Odessa, Texas, if you’re curious.

Oh wow, that sounds so much better than here lmao. My current rental was a full months rent as a deposit, and I’ve paid as much as 2x the monthly rent for a deposit/fees.

No pets, though!

Totally fine, I’ll respond when I get a chance!

The context is appreciated! It’s definitely a very concerning worldwide trend, the states just seem to be a little ahead of the curve.

My current cycle commute is 25-30 minutes so I certainly wouldn’t mind being a little further out! I don’t mind smaller places, I used to live in the town of Astoria (if you’re a Goonies fan) and it was about 10k people. I’m a pretty adaptable gal, I think!

Thank you for the info!

🫡 fascism is certainly on the rise everywhere.

I’ll take a few more years of potential slow erosion (then getting screwed) instead of a near guaranteed loss of rights in a few months.

[not loaded or deleted]

Thank you. If it’s not meant to be it’s not meant to be, but I’ll be damned if I don’t try!

I talked to my boss and boss’s boss (grandboss?) this AM and they’re reaching out to our Canadian executive offices on my behalf to ask if it’s a possibility. So, fingers are crossed!

[not loaded or deleted]

Nah, not expecting any privileges! It’s just a daunting prospect.

From one big dummy to another, thank you! I appreciate the advice from someone who’s done it <3

We’ve had similar struggles here in Oregon, to a lesser degree. I got priced out of the coastal town I adored two years ago.

It is so disheartening that right wing extremism is on the rise in every western country. I’m honestly just hoping to make it through the next few years. Long term looks bad everywhere.

Thank you for your reply!

What a silly thing to say!

Here is an article by a reputable Texas based news agency.

Not coming from the US. Though they’ve stated their intent (and it is bad) it’s not quite the level that it is elsewhere.

That’s been pretty typical for my experience with my prescriber and antidepressants here. Absolute maximum of 3 month supply outside of extenuating circumstances.

[not loaded or deleted]

My current primary care provider here is an NP! It’s been a generally great experience.

I’d definitely love getting to continue to cycle everywhere, but at this point I’m willing to sacrifice for relative safety.

I currently pay $291cad/mo equivalent for full coverage insurance. I’d definitely be trading down to a fuel efficient sedan or something if I did move and actually had to drive regularly.

But yeah. I’m incredibly worried for my family still in Texas.

[not loaded or deleted]

I’ve been leaning towards trading in the sports car for a plug-in hybrid, or maybe an early 10’s TDI VW since they’re a dime a dozen down here. Depending on what the potential commute would look like.

As much as I’d love to have my current car, as it was a dream car (Audi TT in yellow) it’s not efficient/reliable/cheap to insure.

It took me awhile to feel comfortable cycling in Portland, starting over somewhere with potentially less infrastructure isn’t the greatest for the motivation needed.

[not loaded or deleted]

I appreciate the info! My current city (Portland) is stellar by US standards but I’ve lived plenty of areas with zero infrastructure whatsoever.

I’d definitely be a bit bummed, but I imagine I could switch to MTB instead of road/commuting!

[not loaded or deleted]

I appreciate it! I’m planning to look into my company’s Vancouver hub as well, it’s significantly larger than on the island.

[not loaded or deleted]

How do you like Vancouver? I have a couple of contacts in my company’s hub on Annacis (?) Island.

[not loaded or deleted]

Honestly buying a house where I currently am is out of the question, too! I’d resigned myself to being a lifetime renter awhile ago.

Thank you for the offer! I’ll be sure to reach out if I can make it work.

[not loaded or deleted]

Believe it or not, Oregon’s speed limits are pretty similar! All state highways (with one exception) are 88.5kph. The highest speed limit is 113kph on some very select segments of federal highways in the super rural areas. Otherwise it’s about 100kph.

It’s an Audi TT! I don’t think I’d be able to keep it regardless, it’s not a cheap vehicle to operate even down here. Will probably trade in for a basic hybrid or commuter.

[not loaded or deleted]

That’s entirely fair, but there aren’t too many on that list that I’d be able to move to with my current skill set. If Canada gets me a few more years of relative peace, I’ll take it.

[not loaded or deleted]

Way ahead of ya! I work for a US branch of a multi-national distributor. We’ve got Canada, Brazil, Portugal, Ireland, and France too.

[not loaded or deleted]

Thank you so so much! I was worried about navigating the system without a lawyer, costs are definite concern.

I hope people are less of shitheads to you moving forward, nobody deserves that.

You pay $3700 a month for a small studio?
