Just got this email from VIA Rail regarding my trip from Edmonton to Toronto on Sept 2. Does anyone have any updates or insights on the likelihood of this train being cancelled?
“With the ongoing possibility of spreading wildfires in Canada's Western Regions, VIA Rail wishes to inform its passengers that service disruptions are possible for train 2 that departs Vancouver on September 1, 2023, as it runs through these areas. In the event that we cannot guarantee safe operation, this train might be cancelled without alternate transportation. Passengers will be contacted and informed of the cancellation. Please note that VIA Rail is closely monitoring the situation as it relates to safety of operations as well as air quality. However, as emissions from forest fires can travel large distances, passengers with respiratory problems are advised to take proper precautions and to inform themselves of the status of the air quality before departure. Furthermore, if the train does travel, it could incur a delay on route. Due to the nature of the situation, we are unable to estimate the duration of this delay. If this does not suit your needs, you may contact our customer center to cancel your reservation and obtain a full refund (including a refund for any VIA Rail connection or return trips on the same booking). Alternatively, you may modify your reservation without incurring any service charges. VIA Rail’s customer centre at 1-888-VIA-RAIL (1-888-842-7245) or TTY 1 800 268-9503 (for persons who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or who have speech disabilities). We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.”
