More seasoned vets out there: Is it better to focus on career advancements or pursue other academic things that make you happy?
Post Body

Allow me to elaborate! I’m 13yrs out. Had a pretty varied career of govt, mixed animal, ER, easy and advanced GP. I’m currently at a nice VCA practice with an okay caseload. Enough of a caseload that I could go for ABVP. I was ACVPM eligible at one point but due to mental health, moving, and lack of interest didn’t pursue my exams.

Well now I’m considering abvp. My motives I worry about though. I really want to have my board certification so that when I make a recommendation to a colleague it sticks. I see vets regularly treat in ways that aren’t consistent with evidence based practice and when I point out treatment plans or recommendations I get thanks and consideration but I just feel that my recommendation doesn’t come with any more weight than their own internal monologue. I would also like to have the option of moving into a policy making, medical quality, or teaching role some day maybe🤷‍♂️.

However, I also really like music. I have no formal education in music and have been teaching myself guitar. I’d love to take some music theory courses, make a real study plan, have regulars with teachers, maybe write music someday even.

I don’t have time for both. I work a lot more than I play guitar. So seems that maximizing my time there is a good focus. But, I’ve found that work is fun, tolerable, but doesn’t really make me happy. And maybe something more creative would.

Any old, ahem, seasoned vets out there have advice for me?
