With VA facilities housing and treating a lot of people who are going to be considered "high risk", in the event that things end up with hospitals having to triage patients and possibility of the VA system getting overloaded, has anyone talked with the Fisher House Foundation of using their facilities for non-Covid-19 case overflows?
With Covid-19, we will need the main hospitals to be used for more critical patients. This means that eventually less critical patients who may still require some medical care are going to be released to their families who may not be able to properly care for them.
I propose that Fisher House locations be used instead for some classes of patients who are not infected such as those with non-violent mental disorders and "end of life" care.
With how close many Fisher Houses are to local VA medical centers, this would have the benefit of:
Done right, this could possibly free up floors of beds that will be needed in the main hospitals.
It will allow a easy to access location for staff where they can still monitor these patients.
It will allow family visitation (such as for end of life patients) while decreasing the risks of them being infected by someone in the main hospital.
Just a thought, but has anyone in the VA considered this?
