Going to an MP Ball

I'm a retired National Guard MP and have been invited to thier Ball. I cannot fit into my uniform any longer, too much beer. So I will be wearing a suit. My question is beard or no beard. I have always had facial hair but it's grown in pretty good. I will get a haircut but can I just trim it up?? Thoughts?
