Iām an assistant overnight in the ER, towards the end of my shift we had just switched intake doctors and I brought in a cat who was a stray the āOwnerā was going to take to get neutered, but a neighbor had been poisoning the neighborhood cats and she could tell she had gotten to him after 2 of her own cats died from this lady. he was in bad shape and she was clear with me that she didnāt have money for his care so he was assigned as a county case. as soon as i told the doctor about all this she starts saying over and over again things like āwell we donāt have any money left in the doctors fund and the county doesnāt have any money for him so we canāt do anything for him,ā and āI couldnāt even give this cats fluids if i wanted toā. all this felt like she was blaming me somehow for bringing it in when itās my job to intake every patient and we get quite a few strays brought inā¦ then the doctor basically tells me to confirm whether the owner is relinquishing the patient to be euthanized, which is really confusing because like sheās not even going to talk to this woman herself?? but i went out and the woman understood and agreed so i offered for her to visit with the cat before she left and i brought her into a room where she told me about him and the other cats that died while she held him and said goodbye. iām glad i was able to offer this woman the compassion the doctor didnāt but itās frustrating that i had to get as emotionally involved as I did. anyways this is just to vent as iām not sure if thereās anything i can do about the situation. Rest in peace šš.
