Thinking of buying a UDP. What do I need to do, as a new customer, to make sure this works?

I've been looking into buying a UDP on eBay. It's on the loyalty plan, which I've been told is important, but this would be my first line that is actually under my name with Verizon (currently on a family plan). So, if I buy the line and go to do the AOL, is there going to be any issue with me creating an account for the line (I have good credit)? Is there a risk of losing unlimited data in the process?
