I know, I know - there's a pandemic, the world is going to shit, and others have WAY worse problems right now, but FUCK. I hate not having my own island on the new Animal Crossing game!
As many probably know, ACNH was released on the 20th this month for the Switch. I preordered my copy last September and have been counting down the days until I could play. I was SO excited, despite the fact that my partner and I would unfortunately have to share an island...
I was trying to be optimistic and think "oh, it won't be THAT bad!" My partner and I love each other after all - we've been together almost 14 years, we share practically everything, and if I had to share an island with anyone, it'd be them, so...
Despite dying to want to play when it arrived, I let my partner have the first go at it. They set up their home and we agreed on an island name together. Smooth so far. They also got to decide where our neighbors lived. It's cool - it could be changed later, after all.
The second day arrives and they're still glued to the Switch. I mention wanting a turn, but they were insistent that they earn enough currency to pay their loan off first. Then I could just have it "the rest of the day." Well, it wasn't until past 10 pm that they got off, which is roughly the time we go to bed, so I decided I didn't want to start my grand new adventure so late and risk staying up all night, so I said I'd play in the morning.
Morning comes, the third day. We wake up and they immediately grab the Switch. "Oh, I was gonna play..." they said.
Okay, alright, I get it. They're really into it, we're in quarantine so there's not much else to do, so I said sure, BUT let me play come afternoon.
And I finally did play. I started on their island, but nothing I really did felt "new." All the fish and bugs had already been caught, so there wasn't a huge sense of achievement when I caught them too. The museum was already up, as well as the shop. My partner also kept insisting they give me all the tools I needed, and I had to keep telling them that I wanted to learn the recipes and make the items myself. It's not as fun just having it all handed to you, after all, right?
Well, they had already scoured the island trees and rocks for goodies, so there were little materials left for me to actually work with. I made a couple tools but not enough to really get going. I ended up quitting after half an hour. They said they'd be sure to save materials for me the next day.
Forth day, today, arrives. I've been busy and haven't had the chance to pick up the game. But that's not their fault, so it's cool. Evening comes and I'm about to play when they start playing... I didn't even say anything this time. I don't even care. They can keep playing. They'll get bored of it eventually and I'll have my time.
But then they want to get online to trade fruits with our friends... well, they don't have an online account. I told them to just sign up for an account - they were going to need it to play with friends anyways. But they didn't want to spend the money for it. It's $20 for an entire YEAR. That's less than $2 a month!
But they were insistent. They didn't want to buy their own membership. So I said FINE, use my account, but just trade the fruits and leave. I didn't want them collecting items and stuff on my account.
40 minutes later and they're laughing their ass off, clearly having fun playing with their friends. Normally I'm happy to see them happy, but I just felt so frustrated and my nerves were frayed. I grind my teeth and say hey, you seem to really like it - why not get your own account?
They are frugal to a FAULT sometimes. The answer is still "nahhhh." So I remember that they can get a free week trial, and suggest they do that.
"Okay."
15 minutes later.
So uh, you gonna get off my account now?
"I just want to finish something."
10 minutes later.
Are you done yet?
"It's complicated. I need to become their best friend first."
Why?
"So I can get a shovel."
Can't you do that after switching to YOUR account?
"I just want to finish this first."
20 more minutes pass and after some prying, they write our friends (in our online group chat) and say "Sam doesn't want me to use their account, so I have to go for now. 🙁"
Great, now I'm the bad guy - not only with my partner, but our friends too.
Now they're asking me to help them decide where to place 3 new houses, because that's their next task, and I'm just like idk?? I barely know what the island even looks like!
I tell them they can choose, and then they get SAD. I'm practically giving them the reigns and they're like "but I wanted to collaborate with you" and "this is OUR island."
But fuck, I don't even want it to be OUR island! I'd happily spend another $60 for my own game and my own island, but the fucks at Nintendo are a bunch of fucking DICKS and blocked my every chance.
Jfc, I'm just hungry, and tired, my head hurts, and my partner is bugging me about "what do you think about putting a house here?" And I literally don't caaaaare, and I remind them it can be changed, but they're like "yeeeaaaah, but that's expensive.."
Ugggh. Frugal even with their fake game currency.
I just told them to treat it like their island from now on. But they're not happy with that, and I guess I'm not either? I don't freaking know. I just hate all of this bullshit.
