Exfoliators that don't cause micro tears?

I'm looking for an exfoliator, but many that I've tried in the past had grit that wasn't smooth (causing micro tears), or just don't work well. I'm curious about chemical exfoliators but don't know where to look. Preferably nothing super expensive.
