Recognizing that HPAI is a thing (I’m a bird scientist) how is it possible that the US doesn’t have an established process for adopting out “spent” hens? I’m so eager to support something like this, both financially and by rescuing some of the chickens as pets. I am a current chicken and rooster owner and our birds are the happiest most spoiled babies.
The UK Australia have established networks and relationships with poultry plants to give these birds a great life post- battery. They are still doing the work despite HPAI risks (really all you need to do is quarantine the birds.) a few independent rescues have done a little bit of this work but we are a huge country! Does anyone have any leads? I’ve reached out to all major sanctuaries and had no success. I’ve tried farm sanctuary, hen harbor, Woodstock, second hen’d, UPC, the list goes on. TIA!
