Rachel’s childhood trauma

Over the last few weeks I’ve been listening to VPR cast mates’ podcasts and several of them have mentioned that Rachel had a very rough childhood and upbringing. All I know is that her much older aunt adopted her. Does anyone know what else they could have been referring to? Not that this is ANY excuse for her behavior but just curious to know a little background info.
