Why do First Nations people still live on reserves?

Post Body

I know this is a complex question - but with all the extremely negative connotations around the reserves why would First Nations people want to be essentially confined to an area of land - land that non-indigenous people are not allowed to live on, doesn’t this just make things worse in terms of how indigenous Canadians and Europe/foreign Canadians (and travellers) interact and put up walls between communities?

Genuine question as I’m trying to learn more about the history and also where we are today - I visited an area yesterday which was 99% reserve apart from one public park and it just got me thinking.
