Camping for those who work for a living?

I'm super glad that I never bought an RV, as over the last few years it has become literally impossible to find a campsite on the island.
You either have to set an alarm for midnight and book 4 months in advance, or go find a FCFS spot in the middle of the week. How the heck do you pull that off when you work full time? What do you guys do?
