I just saw that the Black Keys cancelled their entire arena tour. Given that the bands emerged in the same musical era and occupied similar cultural spaces, it’s interesting to compare and contrast how they’ve managed their careers post-peak. The Black Keys seem to have hardly evolved musically, with their last album sounding banal and over-produced. VW has taken legitimate risks with their music, and has perhaps seen less commercial success as a result. Nevertheless, VW seems more conscious of their current draw, opting to play mid-size venues rather than arenas (with some exceptions). I’m not a huge Black Keys fan, so maybe someone more familiar with that band can tell me why they seem to have lost the favor of some of their fans.
