I've been using Torguard for a long time. I finally got fiber installed at the new place we moved to (ATT). Torguard had an "add-on" for gigabit speed. So, I bought it, but can only seem to get 200mbps down and quite often the same or close for mbps up. I got better speeds without using the "add on", so I dropped that. I've tried every setting I could, the highest I got was 260mpbs once, but it fluctuates depending on the time of day. I'm aware that one must sacrifice some speed when using a VPN, but I'm sacrificing so much that it's not even worth it. I have tried connecting to different servers on each VPN.
If I turn off the VPN, I can get 850 - 900mbps down and 2 - 300mbps up. Activate the VPN = lose 70% of my speed. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I figured maybe it's Torguard. So, both NordVPN and ExpressVPN have 30 day guarantees in place. I bought both to try out. I figured one of them would be better and I'll just cancel the other one. But, I'm dealing with the same freaking speeds! The Torguard speeds are actually better than either Express or Nord.
One person I talked to said it's because my core processor isn't good enough to handle things. I've got an Intel i7700hq CPPU @ 2.8ghz (8 cpus), 2.8GHz. It's a gaming laptop, definitely not one of the high end ones, but I've got enough power to run Oculus Rift games, and that's the reason I bought it.
Is there anything I can do for this? Forgot to mention, I'm hard wired. I run a Netgear Orbi router with 2 satellites. ATT's wireless sucks. I get those 800 - 900mbps down hard wired from the wall, through the ORBI and then into the PC. I have tried from the wall to the PC, and get the same speeds. Also, I have tried setting up the VPN through Windows 10 rather than use each company's client, but that didn't make a difference either.
