Using a VPN with an Xbox One

Has anyone here tried this? I want to watch BBCi player on my Xbox and I live outside of the UK. From what I've read, the best method is to install a VPN directly to my Wifi router and then connect my xbox to it as usual. Problem is that I've read that installing a VPN to the Wifi network could slow our whole network down, has anyone done this and noticed any issues? Could it then be a problem when streaming 4k Netflix etc?
