VLC Player Pauses on Laptop

My Girlfriend has a Lenovo laptop and had been telling me when watching videos on VLC it randomly pauses..
I brought the laptop home and upon troubleshooting, noticed it only freezes if the camera is being blocked. I opened windows media player and played the same file side by side with VLC, put my hand in front of the camera and VLC paused while WMP continued to play.
I've even disabled the camera in windows and device drivers but it still pauses when my hand covers the sensor.
Any Ideas?
