Hi! So I have this problem I encountered just now. There's this video that plays perfectly without subs but when added with the .srt file it stops. I have done the following without much good results:

1. Saving the .srt file with the same name as the .mp4 file on the same folder
2. Saving the .srt fie with the same name as the .mp4 file on a folder named "subs"
3. Playing the video first then adding the subs.
4. Playing the video with a different .srt file

So as long as subs are added to the video, related or unrelated, it stops playing immediately. I've tried playing other video files with subtitles but it still works perfectly. Only on this specific video file it fails to play. Also, I've tried the default video player for Windows 10 but the file works perfectly in that player with subs. As someone who loves VLC, is there a way to fix this problem? I've searched everywhere but still haven't found a fix. :(
