Emulate TV playback quality?

Not sure how else to describe it, basically, i want to emulate the quality you can get from:
video file in external HDD -> connecting and playing it via USB to TV.
i like watching movies on my laptop most of the time, but i cant help wanting the quality experience i get from the TV instead of a slightly choppy washed out image. I don't really know my stuff when it comes to multimedia files and codecs and would appreciate any help from you guys. c:
