I keep a "Get Home Bag" in the trunk of my car. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and my job is 17 miles away and across a major bridge from my home. If there was a major earthquake or SHTF situation while at work, I might be stuck or need to take a long and time consuming detour to get back home.
This is what I have in a backpack in my trunk
- 2 liters water
- 6 Cliff bars
- Package of 18 survival bars with 200 Calories per bar
- $100 cash in small bills
- Knife
- Leatherman multi tool
- Spork and USGI can opener
- Coleman first aid kit
- Small bottle of ibuprofen
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Frogg tooggs rain poncho
- Pepper spray
- Lighter
- Paper map of the area where I work
- Notepad and Pens
- Extra pairs of contact lenses and glasses
- Small toiletries bag with toothbrush, toothpaste, contact lens solution, etc)
- baby wipes
- External battery charger for iPhone
- A few snaplight glow sticks
- Leather work gloves
- 10oz flask filled with 100 proof bourbon
Also in my car's trunk is 6 additional liters of water, a blanket, change of clothes, pair of sneakers and extra socks, some canned foods, jumper cables, etc.
I'd love to keep a handgun stored in my trunk but don't think it would be a great idea for long term storage.
