Odd instructions during approach (I think)
Post Body

Hi everyone, I have about 12 hours on VATSIM and have been having a blast. the only thing so far to trip me up was when I was on approach (at KORD I think) in an A320, the controller instructed me to do a visual approach then started to vector me, so I didn't have ILS armed/setup. When I was on base he told me to turn and join the localizer, threw me off a bit because I didn't have ILS ready at all. Is this normal? Do any of you config setup for an ILS approach anyways as a backup?

Thanks for all the great responses!

My irl airlines policy is to brief an VISUAL backed ILS for these scenarios, so you can in fact join the localizer, basically always have the ILS tuned in, you might even sometimes hear “join final approach course” if your airfield does not have ILS approach and instead has an RNAV/LPV approach, which will act the same as the localizer except as you come closer the sensitivity of the CDI is not as crazy as in an ILS
