As you may or may not be aware, there is an ongoing dispute and protest between Reddit and a large number of Redditors. There are a number of good articles that get into the details of the dispute, but a quick TLDR;
-----
Reddit announced a policy change that effectively shutdown most of the third-party apps (Apollo, Reddit is Fun, and others). They did this after telling the same developers earlier this year that such a change would NOT happen in 2023. The Reddit CEO has since made several statements (that appear to be false) related to the conversations with said developers. A large number of subreddits went dark in protest (including us) but have come back since. Other much larger subs have stayed dark or taken other steps to limit access in continued protest. Reddit has since started forcefully removing moderators of those subs. (I know that didn't seem quick, but trust me it is.)
-----
Update on our sub. While I chose to participate in the original protest, I have since brought the sub back to normal. At this time, I have no further plans to use the sub as a means of protesting this policy change, especially given the way the CEO has slammed down on the protest. The CEO has very strongly gone on the offensive regarding this policy change, the protests, including attacking the developers. The general consensus is that he is alienating the very users that make Reddit valuable. The end result is yet to be seen. The bottom line is the bottom line. Reddit wants to be profitable like any business, but the C-suite has completely lost touch with what has made Reddit what it is. Us, the users and mods.
Me personally: I have chosen to cancel my Reddit premium subscription and limit my use of Reddit to the two subs that I moderate. I believe that if CEO doesn't change course, or get removed by the board, Reddit will suffer, potentially even fail. How much that will drive traffic to whatever new platform emerges as a result of this catastrophy of a business plan also remains to be seen.
I would encourage you as individual users to do some basic research on what's going on.
In the mean time, happy shooting!
Edit: Adding a couple of the better stories about the situation.
