[Guide] First time buying used car, how do I get a mechanic to check out the car before finalizing sale?

From the guides/videos I've read here, it feels like you're on your own to make a judgement on whether the car is worth buying.

I've also heard people say don't buy a used car without having a mechanic check first, what's the procedure for this? I go test drive the car, then say I'm interested but need a mechanic to check it out first?

Thanks!

So basically just be up front about it, tell them you'll test drive and if I'm still interested, I'll take it to a mechanic?
