I have received several messages from users complaining about the YouTube videos that dominate this sub's feed. While I agree that it is annoying that people are attempting to grow their YT channels via our small sub, the videos generally aren't offensive and some of them actually do have an urban/suburban homestead vibe to them (as opposed to just being general information).
That said, I wanted to get the subreddit's opinion on YT videos... specifically if our community finds them delightful or dreadful, or neither.
My thoughts on the matter: I think YouTube videos should be allowed to be posted, but ONLY if the OP of the video actively engages with the community by (at the very least) providing a brief submission statement of what users should expect to see in said video. Ideally, other users would ask questions or interact with OP and OP would respond accordingly. Users who post YT links without a submission statement or any sort of community interaction would have their link removed and given a warning, then banned from posting if OP continues to offend.
But--I'm only one user of a community of more than 13,000 subscribers. I wanted to get your opinions about it. I've got this poll open for a week where you can vote for what you think we should do about YT links. After a week, I will attempt to implement what ever measure you guys think should be done. I've only four options for the poll, but if you have a more nuanced opinion on the issue, please feel free to comment below.
Thanks for taking a look and I hope your UrbanHomestead journey is going well for you this year!
