NOW (or sooner if you're a time traveller) is the time to start thinking about how/where/what to do with used Christmas trees.
My community garden in NYC usually gets 2-3 dumptrucks of tree mulch per year, when we can. I'm advocating with the city to make our garden a tree drop off site and get a mulcher here.
The chips are acidic, and also need a few years to decompose before they grow anything, but I find this great to use around the lot edges to keep out neighbor plants that send runners, as well as fill any low spots we have.
If your municipality has a public Christmas tree mulching event, consider contacting them now so they can choose your community garden as a location or as a place to drop mulch off after.
I found ours was happy not to have to cart it an hour out of the city. It saved them time and money.
