Ok, so here we go: I really want to homestead or at least get a country property and start producing my own food. That's not practical for me right now.
HOWEVER, I am currently renting a home. I have permission to garden. I'm on about .8 acres give or take. I'm treating this as a Training Ground, something to help get my organic Sea Legs underneath me before I jump off onto the property that I'll own.
The property is on a main drag in my town and gets at least a few thousand cars passing by per day. I have about 5-7000 square feet of un-fenced sunny space in the back, and a bit more if you include the partly shaded areas, and a bit more if you include the shady areas.
With all the traffic that goes by and my rather large driveway, I could easily set up a stand to vend. I've not looked specifically into the laws in my city, but there are farms in the area and small egg operations, and I'm in Ohio so I don't think the law will be a problem.
Given that I don't own the property, and putting yourself in my place, how would you turn a buck off of this location?
I also took some sequential pictures of my growing space, in mid-July, starting at 7:30am and ending at 5:30pm. Imgur album here.
I should mention that I think it's likely too late this year to try to set up a stand, but I'm looking NOW at Next Year, since I'll have an entire season for bed prep, establishing compost piles, etc. I'll probably be here for at least two years, maybe a couple years longer than that.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO, given that this is a rental, all you well-practiced Urban Homesteaders?
Livestock? Berries? Veggies? Flowers? Bees? All of the above? Something I haven't thought of?
If I've left out any pertinent info, please ask, I'm genuinely interested in hearing all of your ideas, warnings, been-there-before-don't-do-this's, etc.
Thanks!
