Rental conundrum
Post Body

Hi everyone!

I'd like your thoughts on my current situation. I am renting a property with just shy of one acre of land. I have been here just under a year and I have the eventual goal of purchasing land and starting a homestead with more permanent features :)

However, in the meantime, I have this property with two apple trees of which species I'm unsure, and a lot of space to play with. The Landlord is ok with digging garden beds and pretty much anything else I want to do with the property, so my question is this:

What can I do that won't be "wasted effort" since I'm leaving this place eventually?

For example, I could put in some raspberry canes, blueberry bushes, etc. Those wouldn't necessarily cost me a lot of money and I can dig them up and take them with me or leave them as a gift for the next occupant.

I could also build a smokehouse/sugar shack which would be cool and fun but would be expensive and is something I'd have to leave behind, thus wasting my money and efforts.

Those are just two examples I picked out of the air, to illustrate where I'm going with this. Since I have all winter to plan, what could I do on this property to re-hash old skills and learn new ones? What types of things could I do to take advantage of the property without investing a ton of money and materials for permanent-type structures and such?

I have a compost spot picked out already, and I want to plan the garden and dig beds next spring for herbs, veggies, etc., but what are your ideas for things I could get going at a rental property?
