It's flaired as a counter-narrative fact because it doesn't fit the narrative pushed by Trump supporters. I was banned from r/askaconservative for stating this fact.
Donald Trump's trade war was costly. The majority of the incidence of the tariffs on Chinese goods fell primarily on the consumer, costing the American consumer $1.4 billion a month in 2018. This means that the tariffs did not do their intended job of hurting China. The tariffs also led to a reduction in American exports and have been shown to reduce manufacturing output. This isn't really surprising, as such effects have already been well documented by Economists, which is why they overwhelming support free trade. Economists also agree that the trade war specifically is harmful, and that Donald Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs are more hurtful than they are helpful.
Here are some more studies that look into the impacts of the trade war: [1], [2], [3], and [4]. The evidence has been clear on this. Trump's trade policy is terrible for the economy.
Edit: Biden can really help out here by eliminating those tariffs.
If you want more information on why free trade is beneficial for the economy and why economists love it so much, you should check out the r/Economics FAQ on free trade.
