Change the height of terrain collider

Does anyone know of a way to raise or lower the terrain collider separate to the texture.
What I mean is, is it possible to have to collider for a terrain object be slightly below the texture that is part of it.
Part of my plan to simulate buoyancy on a solid terrain (I am making a sand surfing ship), is to allow my ship to "sink" slightly below the surface of the terrain. Creating the illusion of depth.
Its would be fractional at most. But combining this with a slight hovering of the ship, particles and a trail effect. It should give me the effect that I need.
But I don't know how to edit the position of the terrain collider. Any help?
