Being logged out is the best way to avoid being pearled. That's kind of a hard point to argue. That said, keep in mind that you are now combat tagged on login. This means that for a period of time after logging in that when you log out, your character is left standing still in the game. Your character can still be killed/pearled when this happens.
So if you see a warning on reddit that Recharge is in/near your town, DO NOT LOG IN TO SECURE VALUABLES. First hop in mumble or on a private subreddit and ask around if it's safe for you to log in briefly. There was a post on /r/Civcraft yesterday about citizens of Aeon being pearled, about 7 of them. That's because despite the warnings on their subreddit they kept logging in to secure their things, then they saw someone on radar, logged out immediately, and left a defenseless NPC to get pearled.
