Iāve been accepted into the apprenticeship program and start school on Dec. 19. Iām very excited but have zero experience in this field. I was a Helicopter Mechanic in the Marine Corps for 8 years prior to this, so I have some mechanical inclination but thatās it.
My question is this: on the school information email I received today it says Iām required to bring a personal welding hood. Iāve never welded before and donāt really know what I should buy to bring to class. What are some recommendations yāall have for this? Also, if thereās any advice or tips youād like to pass on for the apprenticeship in general, Iād greatly appreciate it! I start work with my first contract on January 2nd and am eager to start, learn, and be a good apprentice!
Thank you, I appreciate your encouragement.
I donāt have my A&P license through the FAA, so that severely limits the kind of civilian aviation jobs I could do. If I had the license I probably wouldāve stayed in aviation, but honestly Iām glad to be pursuing something new. It feels fresh and exciting again, and Iām ready to learn a new skill.
Thatās how I originally found out about and contacted the union was through Helmets to Hardhats. I feel like I see post on here about people waiting such long periods of time to hear back from or get accepted by the union. From first contact to the interview took like 2 weeks for me. Iām sure itās local dependent, but Iād like to think reaching out to them through Helmets to Hardhats also played a role.
