ULPT Request : So our family runs a few businesses , and I am one of the children who constitute the next generation of the family. Now, the patriarch of the family is not indicating clearly who will succeed him or what the succession plans look like. The man just survived his second heart attack and is over 70.
Demanding for my rights directly won't fly... if anything, it will antagonise the parent enough that I may get permanently written out of the will. Neither will taking the legal route.
How do I show clearly but in an indirect and hopefully subtle way that I want to know where I stand in the succession and what I will get?
Edit : I am the most educated member of the would-be-inheritors, doing reasonably good - $2m nw self made -in my career outside the family business, and more savvy than the others.
Where I seem to suffer is a clear personal liking by the patriarch for one of the younger children. This child is quite smart, but very unmotivated and a massive spender with extravagant tastes. This kid also looks a lot like the parent.
Edit 2: I am not currently a part of the businesses as I am waiting to be asked. Me asking will change the power dynamic quite significantly and parent will expect me to toe their line. The parent is quite controlling if that wasn't clear
Edit 3: 3 kids including me as potential inheritors. Eldest is fully involved in the business but has shown limited business savvy. Capable at being a fixer and executer type, but has run 2 businesses to the ground when left to his own whims and plans. Also this person is not a direct child, but a cousin of ours. So not a legal heir if that matters.
Second is me.
Third is the golden child, who as mentioned is intelligent, and tbh reasonably capable, but thoroughly unmotivated and uninterested in real work
