First year ump, too jumpy behind the plate
Post Body

As the title states, first year ump here, and Iā€™m just too skitterish behind the plate on hard throwers. 10u and even most 12u Iā€™m pretty good about staying engaged, but when I get to 14u some of the kids throw so hard I find myself jumping in the first inning until I really concentrate. Any tips to avoid this? Does it just come with time? I usually work a few 10 u games and a few 14u games a week. Maybe the back and forth is not helpful? Should I ask my assigner to keep me at the lower levels until I get more comfortable? Thanks for any tips.

Comes with time. Lock in track the ball and make sure you are in the slot

I find the first 3-5 games per year I am still jumpy til I settle in. I agree with above, took a pitch on the elbow last night, 12catcher never put a glove on it
