There are lots of arm chair experts on this situation and I've been going through the rules.
The definition that stands out to me is that of obstruction in which the fielder doesn't have possession of the ball or is not in the act of fielding the ball that impedes the runner.
Lots of people saying that a fielder can't be protected after an error, but that doesn't make sense because the fielder should always have a right of way to get the ball as long as they are within a step of it. In this case I am interpreting the pitcher is in the act of fielding the ball to make a play on the runner so he is protected and the runner has to let him get the ball.
