Would you take a synthetic or down bag on the AT?

Post Body

Probs start date of anywhere in early march to early April nobo.

Got a nunatak 30 degree synth and a zpacks 30 degree down, both 3/4 zip hoodless mummies. The down bag I can probs get down to 30 with some base layers but that was in dry air with a dry and clean bag. The synth I’ve taken out in humid Scotland down to freezing and was not comfortable at all, and it’s now spent a few more years in storage.

The other consideration is pack volume, the synth pretty much takes up half my 35l pack, the down probs a third. I think I’d still probably be able to fit in a 4-5 day resupply with either option if needed, just the synth will make packing out town luxuries more of a headache (think pizzas, burgers, loaves etc)

I don’t think I like the idea of shelter hopping but never really been exposed to it and who knows I may end up enjoying it.

Single wall shelter; either bag will scrape up against the wall given dimensions.

Edit: thanks for all the replies. I’ll just take my traditional 25 degree sea to summit mummy and my duplex tent. My other one man altaplex is usually fine but I toss and turn a bit and sometimes brush against the walls. If I could turn back time I’d probably get the durston 1 man to ameliorate this problem.
