Help keep me ultralight! (gear shakedown & recommendations) - 28L Fast Pack
Post Body

Hey everyone, cheers to all the people who have perfected their systems and spend less time thinking about their gear and just getting outside.

I am in need of your help. I want to try to cut down my base weight a bit more and ideally free up some room in my 28L fast pack. I want to keep using this pack over the summer and have a feeling that if I find a smaller tent/tarp and quilt, it would free up significant space.

I really love the freedom that this fast pack brings. No hip belt, just really wide shoulder straps that hug my torso. It definitely max-outs around 20lbs when fully loaded with food and water. I try to keep it less than 18 fully loaded.

I am one of those people who tries to use what I have and find creative ways to make what I have work for my needs (hence why I've been using this 28L pack and making it work).

I am an avid day hiker who lives close to the AT, so I try to get out and hike 8-12 miles a week. Most of my day hikes are not overnight, but I can make the following pack set up work for 1-2 nights depending on water carry and how dense I can cram calories into my pack.

Gear I'm on the lookout for:

  • 1 person, 1 trekking pole tent / tarp set up. I find that I actually don't use both my trekking poles for most hikes, and so I want to only have to bring one instead of two. Not a must have, but it would be nice
  • Lighter summer quilt, mostly going to be used on the AT
  • Any other gear that might help me lighten my load / consolidate

TLDR: I use a 28L fast pack as my primary backpack. I want to find some more compact gear for upcoming summer hikes that will help get me back down to that 10lb BW sweet spot and hopefully free up some space in my pack.
