Experience With 3/4-ish (Short) Length Underquilts?

Post Body

I am shopping for an underquilt. I use an ENO sub7 hammock (under 7 oz). I have been using a custom made underquilt for maybe 20 nights totally (I’m just dipping my toes into backpacking again over the past year) but I tried to dry it on medium and I think it had some 7D fabric - in any case, I melted/destroyed the whole thing so I’m now shopping for a cottage business underquilt. My main question here is experiences around full-length underquilts vs., in order to save weight, “short” or 3/4-ish length underquilts plus a short pad or even one’s empty backpack, etc. as a pad for the legs in order. Anyone who’s used the short underquilt to save weight, was there a learning curve to it, and what did you have to learn? What have been the pros (weight saving, what else) and any cons that you put up with in using a shorter underquilt? Also people who’ve given the shorter underquilt a serious try and ended up going back to full-length or are dissatisfied with it, what, if anything, did you like about it and what decided you to go back to a full-length underquilt. Thanks.

Where I tend to go backpack, in winter it may get down to the teens, and I just got back from a trip where humidity was in the high 90’s with a temp in the upper 30’s. l sleep a little on the cold side. These considerations probably affect what kind of down I get, and how much loft, and if I get a water treated down or not rather than choosing between a full-length and a shorter underquilt, but you never know.

I don’t know that it matters for my question, but I am, for example, looking at Warbonnet Yeti (40” long) and an UGQ Zeppelin, short, which is 55” long, and I'll probably be looking at others as well. I know that’s a big difference in length, from 40" to 55". There are a lot of other factors to sort out and get my head around as well, I know, but I’d like to stay focused on people’s experiences between a full-length and a shorter underquilt.Thanks.
