Post Body

Hey all. My 6.6 bumblebee colorway arrived. I posted about my 4.5 last week. Sharing because none of us like bear cans but if we have to use them, companies doing novel things in the UL space is interesting and there hasn’t been much info here about these. Sorry if it annoys anyone not interested.

Weight: 772g/27.23oz/1.7 lb (less than advertised!)
Capacity: 6.6L/403 cubic inches

I’m not associated with the company but I’m a fan. u/ArmstrongHikes asked a good question and I passed it on to the grubcan folks. Here’s what they shared and said I could share here too:

————— Great question!

The problem is in 2015 another bear canister company sued YNP/SEKI for not allowing their item in YNP. YNP won the lawsuit, but ever since then, the lawyers there have been trying to create a new allowance (they can't use the word approve anymore :) system that doesn't open them to lawsuits.

The fact that the Supervisor changes every couple of years and that the visitation has blown up hasn't helped matters. They have more pressing problems.

YNP/SEKI (SEKI just follows YNP because of the PCT etc. ) has these basic requirements of a bear canister. The suing company doesn't follow them. We made sure that Grubcan does. (Interestingly Bearvault doesn't follow all of them either, but they are grandfathered in).

  1. Has to take 2 motions to open. If only 1 motion the bears will figure it out. If it's any more than 2 motions, people won't do it. (When we had the idea for the combo latch- we made sure it fit in this category)

  2. Cannot cause any environmental damage. No hanging from trees, or submerging in lakes (they had  people ask to be able to do this) etc.

  3. No part of the bear canister can be used for anything else like a plate, seat etc. and it's recommended the canister  be  at least 100 yds. away from camp at all times. (Jim and I put our bear canisters about 500 yds from camp- we've seen what those bears can do :)

  4. Has to be hard-sided.

———— Ok me again. So just to be clear, the grubcan does meet all the requirements. #3 surprised me since I’ve been using my bv and bearikade as a chair for years. They shared a bit more info with me on a personal level that I won’t post here but they seem like great people passionate about protecting bears and building products to honor that. So I’m hoping their persistence and cooperation with the parks gets approval going in the near future.

And yes we all know who the suing company is and the saga there 😀
